What desert would be complete without cactus? There are many prickly pear (Opuntia) species in Southern Nevada.

These lovely flowers are actually growing on a "dead cactus," Opuntia stanlyi, a chollo that normally looks dead even when in the best of health.

The bright magenta blooms on this cactus are like glowing beacons in the desert.
